Note This gay romance from Keira Andrews is the first book in a series of forbidden Amish love. It contains explicit sexual situations and graphic language. This is not an inspirational/Christian romance.

The good: I'm a former Anabaptist (Mennonite, related to Amish and knew a lot of ex-Amish). Andrews did her research into Amish and Anabaptist culture. This was a page-turner with a compelling plot. Also, Andrews came up with a cute way of making sure her characters bathed more frequently than once a week (once-weekly bathing is a common practice in Amish communities without running water). I'm sure readers with unbathed-sex squick appreciated it.

The not-so-good: Alas, part of my swift page turning was due to the unbelievable sex scenes and my speeding through them in order to get back to the story. Now, I am not opposed to graphic depictions of sex in romances. I often love it. But as a former Anabaptist, I just could not imagine two young men in a conservative Anabaptist culture moving so fast. Through the first third of the book, I was on the edge of my seat waiting for them to admit their attraction. But then it went immediately from accidental kiss to not-so-accidental humping to all-out sex fest. It was like they had a checklist of sex positions they were determined to try and proceeded according to their determined Amish work ethic. But would two Amish boys really be able to imagine all those sex positions? I would get it if they ran across a book and were, I don't know, stranded in the tornado cellar for a week with said book and a gallon of lube, or if they were on an actual Rumspringa and left their homes for a period of time. I'd even get them humping on a daily basis when they thought no one could hear. But all those elaborate positions in the carpentry workshop ... it was too much for this formerly Anabaptist mind to believe.

I'm on the fence about continuing with the series. I'm curious how the characters proceed after the end of this book. (Thankfully, it's not left on a cliffhanger.) If I could be sure there'd be a higher plot-to-sex ratio, or that the abundant sex was better integrated into plot and character development, I'd continue.

A Forbidden Rumspringa Gay Amish Romance Volume 1 Keira Andrews 9780993859830 Books Reviews

I do this sometimes--cheat on reviewing individual books in a series because I find it very compromising to lead the reader on with full descriptions that leave you hanging. This series is that type. Here is what you should know about each book

1) This series is not kind to the Amish religion and way of life. But it overwhelmingly sympathetic to the majority of the Amish people, most of whom you would welcome as friends.

2) This series is beautifully plotted, exquisitely detailed, and written with such passion that you have your heart in your mouth every step of the way--and that's a good thing to experience. It's divided into three parts a) Discovery, b) Bounty, 3) Recovery (my description). The chord that holds it together is love.

3) The writing is superb.

4. The MCs, Isaac and David, will make you cry, palpitate, laugh and angry, but they never ever leave you feeling you've missed something. This series is a character study that will completely and totally blow your mind--the MCs are frightened but courageous, determined but never arrogant, confused but at peace.

5. The supporting characters are perfectly drawn and not to be messed with--there are plenty of stupid moves, but no one is explicitly evil.

6. The sex is amazing.

Get this series. It might take you six months to get through it like I did, because I would not finish Book 2 until Book 3 was published (you'll know why in the middle of Book 2). Or you may just be so blown away that you need some time to recover between books or adventures. Or you might just rip through them all and go into recovery yourself.

What an incredible triumph! Bravo, Ms. Andrews!
Honestly, I was a bit sceptical of this book. I don't like the cover and the blurb sounded just okay. But I picked it up, because one of my favorite authors, Annabeth Albert, had given it a great review and I had faith that she would not lead me to bad books. Now I am SO thankful that I had faith and gave the book a chance; it was really incredible.
Both Isaac and David were great, but I especially loved Isaac because he felt so real and he was such a good man. Their relationship was passionate and tender.
It was impressive how all the info about the Amish, which is necessary to understand the setting and characters, was weaved in and felt so natural to story. It was just part of the flow. To me, that shows great skill as a writer.
I can't wait to read the rest of the series to find out how things turn out for David and Isaac.
